Lawn Bowl

Intensity Level: Light

What is Lawn Bowls?

Lawn bowls is a low-impact outdoor sport that focuses on strategy, precision, and control. It is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. In the game, players roll balls (called bowls) across a flat grass surface to get as close as possible to a smaller target ball known as the jack. It can be played individually or in teams.

The bowl is designed with a slight weight on one side (called a bias), which causes it to curve instead of travelling in a straight line. This makes the game both challenging and engaging, as players need to plan their shots carefully. Lawn bowls combines strategy (planning), focus (aiming), and execution (controlled delivery). It can be played socially for fun or competitively in local and international tournaments.

Playing Area

  • The playing field is called a green, which is divided into sections known as rinks.
  • Each rink is about 4 to 5 meters wide and 30 meters or longer.
  • There is a ditch at both ends.
  • A marking called the “T” shows where the jack is centred.
A man in a white Singapore Disability Sports Council polo shirt and black shorts kneels on one knee against a white studio backdrop. He looks focused straight ahead while holding a green, speckled lawn bowl close to the ground, posed in a stance ready to roll it.

Basic Gameplay

  • Place the mat in the centre of the rink and stand on it.
  • Face forward and roll the jack to the other end (at least 23 meters).
  • Adjust the jack so it is centred on the T.
  • Players take turns rolling their bowls, aiming to get as close to the jack as possible.
  • Since the bowl curves, players must aim carefully and control their strength.

Game Formats

  • Singles (1 versus 1): 4 bowls each; first to 21 points wins.
  • Pairs (2 per team): 3 bowls each; usually 18 ends.
  • Triples (3 per team): 2 bowls each; about 16 to 18 ends.
  • Fours (4 per team): 2 bowls each; about 15 ends.
  • In team games, the side with the highest total score wins.

How do Visually Impaired Players Rely on Cues?

Without visual cues, players rely on:

  • Verbal instructions from a guide (direction and distance).
  • Muscle memory and technique during delivery.
  • Consistency and feel of each roll.
  • Movements are slow and controlled, and players are guided when moving around the playing area to ensure safety.

Benefits

  • Improves focus, coordination, and control.
  • Builds confidence and independence.
  • Encourages social interaction and teamwork.
