Aerial Stretch
Intensity Level: Light
What is Aerial Stretch?
Aerial stretch is a form of exercise performed using a fabric hammock or sling suspended from the ceiling. This setup supports the body while allowing movements in mid-air, creating a “floating” or weightless experience.

How is it Done?
- The hammock acts as both support and resistance during the session.
- Participants may sit, lie, or wrap parts of their body in the fabric.
- Movements include performing stretches, balance poses, or even gentle inversions (being upside down).
- The support of the fabric allows individuals to move more freely into deeper stretches.
Benefits
- Improves flexibility while reducing strain on joints and the spine.
- Engages the core and surrounding muscles, helping to build overall strength and coordination.
- Promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances body awareness through gentle suspension and flowing movement.
- Supports spinal decompression and improves posture, particularly for individuals who experience tension from sedentary lifestyles.
- Provides a low-impact, full-body workout that combines physical well-being and mental relaxation.
Video Description: The video begins at a train station. A female participant wearing a cap and carrying a white cane exits the fare gate and walks towards a group of participants and volunteers. Several participants use white canes. The group greets one another before beginning their journey together. Volunteers provide verbal guidance and sighted assistance as the group moves through the station concourse and later travels through a busy outdoor urban environment.
Upon arriving at the studio, volunteers guide participants into the exercise room and help them become familiar with the surroundings. Participants place their bags in a designated area before exploring the exercise space. Rows of suspended green fabric hammocks hang from the ceiling above yoga mats arranged neatly across the floor. Participants use their hands to feel the hammocks and orientate themselves to their allocated positions.
As the session begins, participants sit in the fabric hammocks, similar to sitting on a swing, and gently sway back and forth while becoming accustomed to the equipment. Natural light enters through large windows, brightening the room as the instructor provides guidance. Participants hold onto the sides of the hammock slightly above shoulder height and gradually lean backwards. They lift their legs until they are parallel to the floor before pulling themselves back into an upright seated position. Throughout the session, participants progress through a series of movements designed to develop balance, flexibility, body awareness, and confidence.
The class continues with standing exercises using the hammocks for support. Participants hold the fabric while placing one leg into the hammock and performing gentle spinal twists. They then lean forward into hamstring stretches while maintaining balance. The hammocks act as stable anchors, allowing participants to explore movement safely and with control. In another exercise, participants position the hammock across the front of their hips and fold forward, forming an inverted V-shaped position with their bodies.
Later in the session, participants transition into supported inversions. Under the guidance of the instructor, participants lean back into the hammocks and lift their legs into the air, wrapping their thighs around the fabric. The hammock supports the body securely while participants experience being suspended upside down. Volunteers remain nearby to provide reassurance, verbal cues, and physical assistance when required.
Towards the end of the session, participants return to the floor and begin tidying their mats and equipment. The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable as participants move around the studio, interact with one another, and prepare to leave. The video highlights how accessible instruction, appropriate support, and collaboration between volunteers and participants enable people with vision impairment to confidently participate in new forms of physical activity and community engagement.
The video concludes with a group photograph in front of the green aerial yoga hammocks. The female participants and volunteers stand together facing the camera. Several individuals pose with their thumbs raised. Two male participants seated at the front lift their arms overhead, bending their elbows and bringing their fingers together to form a heart shape. The group gathers closely together, marking the end of the shared experience.
