ParaCycling
Intensity Level: Moderate
What is Para Cycling?
Tandem bicycles enable individuals with visual impairments to cycle safely with a sighted partner, providing opportunities for both leisure and competitive participation.
A tandem bicycle is built for two riders: the front rider, known as the pilot, is responsible for steering and controlling the bike, while the rear rider, or stoker, contributes by pedalling without steering. Both riders pedal together to move the bike smoothly and efficiently. This arrangement allows visually impaired cyclists to take part in cycling safely, actively contributing to movement while enjoying the overall experience.
How do Visually Impaired Riders Rely on Cues?
VI rider depends on:
- Verbal communication from the pilot (such as “turning,” “slowing down,” or “stopping”).
- Rhythm and coordination while pedalling.
- Trust and teamwork with the pilot.
Safety and Support
Para cycling is designed to be safe with proper support:
- The pilot is trained to guide and control the bicycle.
- Riders wear helmets and safety gear.
- Cycling is often done on controlled routes (such as parks, tracks, or quiet roads).
- Clear communication is maintained throughout the ride.
Benefits
- Improves fitness, strength, and endurance.
- Builds teamwork and trust between rider and pilot.
- Boosts confidence and independence.
- Provides an enjoyable way to explore outdoor environments.
