Soundball (Blind Tennis)
Intensity Level: Moderate
What is Soundball (Blind Tennis)?
Blind Tennis, also known as Soundball, is a sport specially adapted for individuals with visual impairments. It follows rules similar to traditional tennis, with key modifications to make the game accessible.
Players use a soft sponge ball that produces a rattling sound when it bounces, allowing them to track the ball through hearing. Using a tennis racket, players hit the sound-emitting ball across a smaller court with a lower net, making the game easier to play. Depending on the player’s ability level, the ball is allowed multiple bounces (usually two to three) before it must be returned.
How do Visually Impaired Players Rely on Cues?
Without visual cues, players depend on:
- The sound of the ball to locate and time their shots.
- Verbal guidance from a coach or partner.
- Listening skills, reaction, and coordination.
- Muscle memory and positioning on the court.

Adaptations and Support
- Court boundaries may be tactile or clearly marked.
- Coaches or volunteers assist with positioning and ball feeding during practice.
- Rules are adapted based on ability level to ensure fair play and enjoyment.
- For more detailed rules and regulations, you can visit the International Blind Tennis Association (IBTA).

- Improves coordination, balance, and reaction time.
