Resistance Band / Chair Yoga

Intensity Level: Light

What is Resistance Band / Chair Yoga?

Chair yoga with a resistance band is a gentle exercise class done mainly while sitting on a chair, with some movements done standing while holding the chair for support. The chair provides stability, allowing you to move comfortably and with confidence. A resistance band is a stretchy strip that gently pulls back against you when stretched. The more you stretch the band, the more resistance you feel, making it a safe and effective way to build strength without heavy weights.

A smiling visually impaired woman seated on a chair performs a side stretch using an orange resistance band. She holds one end of the band with her right arm raised straight up, and the other end with her left arm extended out to the side.

How is it Done?

  • Movements are slow and controlled, combining both stretching and strengthening exercises.
  • While seated, you may lift your arms, reach in different directions, or pull the resistance band to work your arms, shoulders, and upper back.
  • When standing, you will hold onto the chair for support as you perform light leg exercises or simple stretches to improve balance.
  • You will be guided to coordinate your breathing with your movements (e.g., breathing in as you stretch, and breathing out as you relax) to keep the body calm and reduce tension.
  • The exercises are designed to feel gentle and safe—stretches should feel like a light pull rather than pain, making your muscles feel active but not strained.

Benefits

  • Improves flexibility, overall body strength, and balance in a highly comfortable and supportive way.
  • Reduces physical tension and promotes mental relaxation through guided, rhythmic breathing.
  • Offers a safe, low-impact method to build muscle tone without the need for heavy gym equipment.
