Dragon Boat

Intensity Level: Moderate | Vigorous

What is Dragon Boating?

Dragon boating is a team water sport where a group of paddlers sit in a long boat and paddle together in sync to move forward. It is highly suitable for visually impaired (VI) participants because it relies more on teamwork, rhythm, and communication than on sight.

How is it Done?

  • VI paddlers sit in the boat alongside other teammates.
  • Each paddler uses a single-bladed paddle to row the boat.
  • At the front, a drummer or stroke leader sets the rhythm by calling commands or beating a drum.
  • At the back, a steerer controls the direction of the boat.
  • VI participants follow verbal cues and rhythm to paddle in sync with the team.

What do VI Paddlers Rely on?

Without visual cues, VI participants depend on:

  • The sound of the drummer or voice commands
  • The rhythm of teammates’ paddling
  • The feeling of the paddle in the water and boat movement

This helps them stay coordinated and move efficiently with the team.

Dragon boating is generally safe for VI participants with proper support:

  • Everyone wears a life vest
  • Coaches and teammates provide clear instructions and guidance
  • Participants are assisted when getting in and out of the boat
  • Activities are conducted in controlled and supervised water conditions

Benefits

  • Builds teamwork and communication skills
  • Improves fitness and coordination
  • Boosts confidence and inclusion
