Goalball
Intensity Level: Moderate | Vigorous
What is Goalball?
Goalball is a team sport specifically designed for visually impaired individuals. It is played indoors on a court, where two teams of three players compete to score goals by rolling a ball into the opponent’s goal.
How is it Played?
- All players wear eye shades to ensure fairness, so everyone relies on hearing rather than sight.
- The ball contains bells inside, allowing players to track its movement through sound.
- Players take turns rolling or throwing the ball towards the opponent’s goal.
- The opposing team listens carefully and tries to block the ball using their bodies.
What do VI players Rely on?
Since vision is not used, players depend on:
- The sound of the bells in the ball.
- Listening skills to locate and track the ball.
- Touch and spatial awareness, using court markings (raised and tactile lines) to understand their position.
- Teamwork and communication.
- Teammates communicating clearly to coordinate defence and attack.
- Players must stay quiet during play so everyone can hear the ball.
- Trust and teamwork are essential for success.
Safety and Support
Goalball is safe and structured:
- Players wear protective gear (such as knee pads and elbow pads).
- The game is played on a controlled indoor court.
- Rules are designed to minimise collisions and ensure safety.
Benefits
- Improves hearing, reaction time, and coordination.
- Builds confidence and independence.
