Swimming (Para Swimming)
Intensity Level: Light | Moderate
What is Swimming?
Swimming is an accessible and inclusive sport for visually impaired (VI) individuals. It involves moving through water using different strokes such as front crawl, breaststroke, backstroke, or butterfly. It can be enjoyed for recreation, fitness, or competition.
How is it Done?
- VI swimmers swim in designated lanes in a pool.
- They stay aligned in the lane by using a lane rope to guide them down the pool by feel, looking at the black lane marker at the bottom of the pool, or by maintaining a consistent stroke count.
- A coach or volunteer may provide verbal assistance from poolside.
- In competitive swimming, a person (tapper) would gently touch the swimmer with a pole with a soft ball attached to one end to signal when they are approaching the wall for turning or finishing.
How do Visually Impaired Swimmers Rely on Cues?
Without visual cues, swimmers depend on:
- Stroke counting to estimate the distance to the wall.
- Touch (lane ropes or pool wall) for orientation.
- Verbal guidance from coaches.
Safety and Support
Swimming is safe with proper support:
- Lifeguards and coaches are present at all times if VI needs assistance or feels unconfident in the water.
- Swimmers are guided when entering and exiting the pool, if needed.
- Clear instructions are given before and during the session.
- Training is conducted in a controlled pool environment.
Benefits
- Improves fitness, strength, and endurance.
- Enhances body awareness and coordination.
- Builds confidence and independence.
- Provides a low-impact activity that is gentle on joints.
